EDF Energy- #Pretty Curious

Hello, It's 2 Peas In A Pod Blog Here,

We’re Courageous, We’re Amazing, We’re Pretty & We’re Pretty Curious.

Hello everybody, welcome back to our blog! No, we aren’t vain and full of ourselves, we are inspired by this great campaign. We are very excited for this blog post! We've teamed up with EDF Energy and their Pretty Curious programme, which aims to encourage girls to consider STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers.

EDF Energy set itself an ambition that 30% of its STEM graduate and apprentices would be women by 2018. In 2017, EDF Energy already increased the number of women in these programmes to 35% but they're not stopping there. The Pretty Curious programme is continuing its mission to encourage more girls to pursue STEM-based subjects at school and in future careers.
That is such an amazing ambition in our eyes and we can't wait to help promote this amazing project. Gender equality is something that we are very passionate about and the fact that a well-known company such as EDF Energy can recognise that matter is amazing. We believe more companies should be following EDF Energy's footsteps.

The Pretty Curious programme focuses on raising awareness of the issues surrounding girls and STEM: giving girls relatable role models as well as hands-on experience.
EDF Energy and Disney have recently joined forces with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which came out in UK Cinemas on 14th December 2017. As the film features two exciting and inspirational female characters with strong STEM skills; Rose and Rey, they can encourage girls to look at STEM in a new light. We think that being able to see women using STEM skills in a film of this scale is a great way to plant the seed that there are interesting careers for women in STEM. It will give women that little push to go ahead and follow their dreams. We believe that your gender should not define your career and we are massive believers in that saying, and a programme like this can help educate women all around the world, on how important it is to follow your aspirations.

. As we mentioned, the Pretty Curious programme aims to inspire girls to pursue STEM-related subjects at school and in their future careers. The campaign has given girls a real sense of what it might be like to work in STEM careers by providing hands-on experiences and digital content, which you can take part in on the website such as:

Create a sharable and personalised avatar in a STEM-related career to picture yourself in a potential future role ranging from a biologist to an electrical engineer. If you’re not sure what the future could hold, take the easy personality quiz to see what career may be best suited to your interests

Watch 360ยบ videos to experience a day in the life of the architect of the Shard, see what it’s like to work on a wind farm or explore the offices of a software developer with everyday amazing women. We participated in this and we have to say it is pretty cool. We were lucky enough to experience the video with the special Pretty Curious Google cardboard headset. We have to admit we did find ourselves walking around the room to see what was behind us.

We were also sent a 'littleBits Droid Inventor Kit' and we built a Star Wars Droid, which we had so much fun building and then playing with once we’d finished! We were surprised at how easy we found it and we used our STEM skills to put it together. It also gave us some insight into the type of work we might take part in, in a STEM career.

All the instructions were step-by-step so they were easy to follow and we used the app for each step. After connecting certain circuits to their designated wires, we soon had the full electronics for the droid. After creating the plastic body and placing stickers on it was time to be big kids and play with it. It was really fun using the app to make the Droid move around and watch it make noises. We loved the feature where we could record our voices and then the Droid would say it. Guiltily we did make the Droid spin in circles saying, 'Jade & Lydia' or '2 Peas In A Pod Blog'. We also loved the 'scream' function.

All in all, we loved building and playing with the Droid, it was a lot of fun. It has opened our eyes to the world of STEM and how much fun it can be!

We hope you have enjoyed our blog post and it has inspired you to go out there and get your hands dirty with a bit of inventing. The Droid kit was so fun! Thank you so much EDF Energy for sending it to us, it amused us all day and it was great to get out and play with it. We hope we have inspired you to look into the #PrettyCurious programme.  EDF Energy also sends a Pretty Curious Email Update that we recommend you sign up for. It’s a great way to stay updated on their progress and find out how you can get involved with the campaign. If you are interested then the links are down below:
