Hi all its Jade and Lydia here, if you have been a reader of our blog for a while, you will know we both have pet greyhounds! They just make the best pets. Jade has two boys at home called Teddy and Bosco and Lydia has a boy and a girl called Onesie and Amy. They are all adorable. However, there are still greyhounds out there looking for their forever homes. Once they retire from their racing careers they are on the lookout for their forever home. So, we thought we would list 5 reasons as to why you should adopt a greyhound!
1. They are gentle giants.
They may be big in size and this can put people off, but they are all so sweet and gentle. All they want is love and hugs. We can definitely vouch for this, Teddy loves nothing more than sitting on the sofa with his head on your lap whilst he snuggles!
2. Contrary to popular belief... they do not require a lot of walking.
Yes, that's right, they are known as 100mph couch potatoes! They may run fast but they prefer to be laid out on a sofa! They obviously do need walking like every other dog, but two short walks will do a greyhound fine. They do love walks especially finding new scents etc!
3. They are a sociable breed.
Due to racing before their retirement, they are used to meeting loads of other dogs, so this works in their favour. Often you will find the majority of greyhounds will live with other dogs and other breeds. On walks they love meeting new dogs and playing with them, so you will never have to live in fear of passing other breeds of dogs on your walk!
4. They can live with cats.
We know this reason could have been intertwined with reason 3... but we thought this deserved a reason of its own. So, many people are put off by the fact that because they chase a fake hare they will not live with a cat! Wrong. Over half of the greyhounds looking for homes will live with a cat. Lydia's two, Onesie and Amy both live with Bubbles the cat. They all get on so well. So, it is all about finding the right dog for you.
5. You will join the greyhound gang.
Once you adopt a greyhound you've officially bought yourself a membership to a whole different world. We have made so many friends through having greyhounds. There are so many pages on social media where everyone with greyhounds meets up in a certain park and go on big walks. Also, being apart of the greyhound world has its perks, because you can ask any group or people for advice and they will be only too happy to help. It is amazing.
We could carry on the list of reasons for ages but we thought we should narrow it down to 5. All in all they make the best pets and once you've adopted a greyhound there is no going back! It's like chocolate once you've had one, you go back for more! Even if you are not in a place to adopt a dog yet, then we are certain that most greyhound rehoming kennels will greatly accept help with walking and food donations! So, please do what you can.
