What Is Feminism?

Hello It's 2 Peas In A Pod Blog Here,

Feminism, it is a big word with many different meanings. Some people fear the word Feminism and some are joyful by the word Feminism. We both believe that Feminism is a big word and we shouldn't be afraid to use it in our vocabulary. In fact, we believe that we should use it more often.

So let's get to the basics and research what the word 'Feminism' actually means. The Oxford English dictionary says that the definition is 'The advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes'. We feel like that is a good enough definition and brings the word into a whole. However, nowadays it is used in a variety of contexts. So we decided to head to twitter and ask you guys what your definition of Feminism is.

We were overwhelmed by all of your responses and all of them were well thought out and meant a lot.

We completley agree with Lauren. Being a Feminist and believing in Feminism is believing that we are all equal and that no one is better than each other.

Charlotte explained it really well and in such depth. We especially liked "Girls stand with girls. Girls stand with Boys" That is a great quote, it shows that we should get a long with everyone and it should not matter about their gender. Being a diffrent gender doesn't make you any less superior to the other person across the room. We are all the same and all should be equal.

Erin made a valid point of equal rights. Until 1918 women in the United Kingdom were not allowed to vote. Voting is such an important right to have. We often sit there and admire the work of the Suffragettes and Suffragists. They fought for such a basic right that we now have the privilege of. We should not take it for granted.

Abbie brought something to the light of religions and sexualities. Completely agree. The generic thought is Gender but Feminism goes much deeper than that. It's also about the equality of gay, bisexual and transgender people too. We should treat everyone the same, what should it matter what their sexuality is? Again with the religion, that is such a talked about subject and many people get the wrong conception of many religions. Not everyone is bad. Take Muslims for example, they are all good people and we should not treat them any differently than the average Christian next door. Everyone has feelings, remember that.

Another question to raise is, do you have to be female to use and relate to the word Feminism and do you have to be female to call yourself a feminist? Many people believe that you can only be female to use them words. No that is wrong. You can still be a feminist and be a male. It doesn't matter what gender you are to believe in everyone being equal and having a fair shot in life. So if you are a male and reading this, don't be afraid to use the word feminism or call yourself a feminist. As you believe in equal rights.

So, that is us from this week. We hope you have enjoyed reading this blog post as much as we have enjoyed writing it. Feminism is something that is close to our hearts and we completely agree with it. We felt like serious matters like this should be spoken about more over on our blog. Thank you to those who participated in tweeting us your definitions. If you would like us to write more about serious issues like this, then please let us know.
